I got into music very early on (I reacted to music when I was two months old), and it has been a great part of my life ever since.
Mainly it all started in the late 70's for me, discovering The Beatles and The Osmonds (played their song "Crazy Horses" on repeat and finally wore out the tape) and then with my cousin introduced Kiss for me (around 1980).
Through-out the 80's, I listened to various kinds of Hardrock / Heavy Metal / Thrash Metal (early Def Leppard, Judas Priest & Anthrax being house gods)
Early 90's was more about Grunge (great Nirvana fan), and after that, I got into all sorts of shit, Eurodisco/Techno, Indie Rock, Post Punk, Punk Rock, Alternative Rock, Alt. Country Rock, Synth, Shoegaze, Psychedelic Rock, Garage Rock, Retro Punk, College Rock...pretty much anything that sounds good for me.
A great deal of discovering and expanding my musical horizon, was due to the fact that I picked up the electric guitar late 1994, and, I started to hear music in a different way than I had before, and I wanted to explore and find new shit to listen to, than the usual crap I've been stuck with the past 15 years to that point.
With the introduction of Ze Internetz and later on Le Torrenting, one had much easier ways to discover underground music, (stuff that never gets airplay in your regular radio/tv stations).
I still love to go out and buy my music from the remaining Record Shops that are available, although, it's much easier to go to your favorite online web shop and buy them from there. These days a lot of the regular web shops have the most unusual bands/artists on hand, which is good, makes it easier to find rare "hard to find" stuff.
